JotNot Turns Your iPhone into a Powerful Scanner

image

I’m a huge fan of apps that help improve my productivity. I’m always searching for the latest apps that allow my phone to do something that helps makes my life easier.

Stumbling through a deal website I found an app called JotNot Scanner Pro that was free for a day. A “scanner” app that snaps pictures and converts them “scans” ready for email/fax. I tried it out and I was amazed by the results. The finished document looked like an actual scanned document and was extremely clear.

It’s definitely changed the way I handle important documents. I’m able to snap pictures and have copies of important receipts. It converts white board marks into legible pictures. And it’s an awesome way to “scan” entire chapters of books at the library to avoid having to buy expensive textbooks.

Here’s how-to turn your iPhone into a powerful scanner.

Election Day.

November 6th, 2012 marks the beginning of a new presidency: a second-term Barack Obama/Joe Biden or a brand new Romney-Ryan presidency. Tomorrow, 6 or so states are going to decide the president for the next four (or eight) years and, if you pay attention to polls, the popularity of both candidates is equally tied at 48%-48%. By this indicator, you might call this an extremely close race.

But of course, you can look at the concluding polls in many swing states showing a slight lead for the president which kind of show a different story. But that’s a whole different story.

For me, my decision to vote for Obama this year is largely a combination of a hope for a more proactive second-term Obama adminstration (45%) and, more importantly, not being sold by the idea of Mitt Romney presidency( 55%).

Believe me, I understand the dissillusonment. I understand why people aren’t so hopeful for a second Obama adminstration. I definitely feel that too to some extent but having kept up with this race my decision really does come down to the fact that I am not sold on the idea of electing Mitt Romney as president. Why? I don’t know the guy.

I’ll agree that progress might have been slow. But then again the economy isn’t something that is fixable overnight. Jobs that disappear aren’t as easily brought back. You can’t just end the war on your first day and pay back the previous eight years of debt. And, let’s not forget, a political party whose majority leader swore to do everything to make president Obama a one-term president.

Congress really failed in trying to reach across the aisle and pass solutions and sure, blame is to be given to both sides, but when you have a majority party who has passed and introduced more laws blocking access to birth control and reproductive rights than jobs bills and programs to put Americans back to work we’ve got a problem.  (Really? We’re still debating these issues?)

And it’s this party that Mitt Romney was given and will rule with. And the reason why I’m not voting for him is I really don’t know which Mitt Romney I would be voting for but I do know which party I’ll be electing.

We’ve seen him flip-flop on almost every single position. And then on more positions. And more. You could make action figures out of Mitt Romney. There would be Business Mitt who made millions outsourcing jobs while avoiding paying taxes by stashing his earnings in the Cayman Islands and other tax havens. There’s Governor Mitt who was pro-gay, pro-choice, anti-gun, and pro-healthcare before he was against it.

And what about Primary Mitt who felt illegal immigrants will just kick themselves out and that’ll fix the immigration problem. The one that promised a $2 trillion dollar increase in military spending while, in the next sentence, talking about across-the-board tax cuts and claims to reduce the debt and defecit.

And his party is not any better although at least showing consistency. We’ve seen his party obstruct a lot of the presidents plans or attempts at solutions. We’ve seen them take extreme positions against climate change, evolution, birth control, while also advocating for bombing Iran, repealing Roe V. Wade, cutting social security, and other issues. Their entire primary was a contest to see who the loudest most extreme person in the room was.

America deserves better than both of these candidates (and I’d further add: their parties) but the simple fact is this: between these two there is a clear choice. I’d love to give Mitt Romney the benefit of the doubt but he hasn’t given me any reason to. The president on the other hand has at least shown consistency and steady leadership. I’ll take that over shoot-and-then-aim.

Mitt Romney is a man made out of Playdoh: easily morphed into whatever he needs to be. And the current Republican Party has morphed into a believer of extreme positions that Mitt Romney just isn’t. Or maybe he is, who knows.

It’s unfortunate. While trying to bend over backwards to appeal to this extreme fraction he killed off a Mitt that might have had a really good chance at winning over some Democrats and Moderates like me.

If you’re voting for Romney tomorrow, just answer this question to yourself: what would a Mitt Romney presidency really look like? Chances are you don’t know and neither do other Americans (Republican and Democrat). We know he favors tax cuts and military spending. Everything else is an educated guess.

And If one of your reasons for voting for Mitt Romney is the simple fact that he isn’t Obama. You might be doing it wrong.

iPhone 5 and what it means for the smartphone field.

So the iPhone 5 was announced this morning and chances are you’ve already started seeing the debates on your Facebook feed’s about Apple disappointing and not being revolutionary and whatnot.

Putting all of that aside, what exactly does today’s announcement mean to you as a consumer? How will it impact the current market and how will it affect phones in the future? Has Android finally “won” and beaten Apple?

8-Inch Kindle Fire HD released along with other new Kindles.

In tech news that isn’t related to Apple (which seems rare on my blog, sorry) Amazon introduced and released new Kindles Today. They released:

Kindle Fire HD 8” 4G - A brand new 4G-enabled 8” tablet for $499. This is Amazon’s new star with an HD screen, more memory, and upgraded internals.. It also comes with the option of Amazon’s 4G service for $50 a year. That’s a really good deal. Pricing for the tablet starts at $499.

Kindle Fire HD 8” - The same exact model that I described above without the 4G service. The price starts at $299 dollars.

Kindle Fire HD - This is an upgraded version of Amazon’s previous 7’ tablet: the Kindle Fire. It has a faster processor and upgraded internal specs making it a really good, overall tablet priced at just $199.

If you’re not a fan of tablets and prefer the classic reading Kindle. They introduced new ‘PaperWhite’ technology into their old Kindles making them easier and clearer to read and now with a backlight option for those of you that prefer reading in the dark.

The Kindle PaperWhite 3G starts at $179, the Kindle PaperWhite (without 3G) starts at $119 and the older, more traditional Kindle has now been lowered to $69.

A really good price for those of you looking for a dedicated ebook reader or looking to give the Kindle as a gift to an avid reader.

Overall, Amazon really did their homework on these models. There are a lot of variations in terms of pricing so you can easily find a tablet for the price you’re looking for. Coupled with insanely cheap 4G service ($50/year), we’ve got some fresh new tablet competition.

Enough to challenge the iPad? Maybe not. Android tablets? Most definitely. The Kindle Fire HD is in perfect competition with the Nexus 7. It’ll be interesting to see if Amazon can repeat the success it had with the first Kindle this time around.

Here’s hoping they do!

And it’s official: iPhone 5 to be announced September 12th.

And it looks like the rumors are true. Apple just sent out their press invitations for the iPhone 5 unveiling which is scheduled for September 12th at 10:00AM. You might want to hold off on that upgrade if you were thinking of upgrading soon.

Want information on the iPhone 5? I’ve covered most of the general information including the features it’s most likely going to have and what it’s going to look like.

But the definite features won’t be known until it’s released and we have a definite date to look forward to now. Will Apple prove the rumors to be true? Will it fool the world and unveil a completely new design/look? I guess we’ll have to see later.

Surveillance video that led to assault charges for a Prince George’s County police officer appears to show a gun firing as an officer struck a man in February.

The footage from a Brentwood, Md., store appears to show Corp. Donald Taylor striking 19-year-old Ryan Dorm with his gun. A flash upon impact appears to be the gun firing.

Taylor lied about the incident, police said. The officer claimed Dorm, believed to be involved in an attempted robbery at a gas station, reached for the officer’s weapon.

Dorm spent about four months in jail before prosecutors dropped the charges against him.

“Well, the video contradicts what the officer originally wrote in his charging documents,” said Dorm’s lawyer, Jimmy Bell. “What it shows is that my client didn’t lie. They print my client is a criminal. They put his face on television saying he committed these crimes, and he didn’t.”

Taylor was charged with second-degree assault last month.

Dorm and his lawyer filed a $10 million lawsuit against the police department and Taylor.
